Return to Wilson Taking Flight

About the Campaign

Bridging the Gap – As part of a 2012 voter-approved HISD bond program, Wilson Montessori received $25 million to fund the expansion and renovation project. While the bond financing covers the basics of our new space, we now have to raise additional funds for the materials, supplies and training needed to provide children with an authentic child-led, hands-on Montessori education.

The goal of Wilson Taking Flight is to raise $200,000. Your gift to the campaign will help ensure that new classrooms open with beautifully crafted Montessori materials and specially trained teachers. Your support is an investment in our school, in our children and in the future of public Montessori education in HISD!

Wilson Taking Flight is an ambitious 18-month fundraising campaign to bridge the gap between HISD’s bond funding and the additional funds needed for creating and sustaining a comprehensive Montessori environment.

Wilson Taking Flight is specifically focused on two essential components of a Montessori education – the prepared environment and Montessori trained teachers.

Specially designed materials and teachers trained in the Montessori method are hallmarks of the Montessori learning environment. Can you imagine a Montessori classroom without pink towers, golden beads, sandpaper letters or binomial cubes? Without work rugs on the floor or collective tables where students gather to work together? Without Montessori teachers trained to act as mentor, model and guide?

Wilson Montessori is Growing!

Wilson Montessori is committed to creating a student-centered learning environment that nurtures the unique creativity of each child and challenges students to become independent learners. In November 2016, construction began on an exciting expansion and renovation project that reflects this commitment, and carries it into the future.

The project includes a new three-story addition as well as significant renovations to the original school building.

Design features include:

  • a two-story library space filled with natural light;
  • a modern dining area that opens to the outdoor gardens;
  • 11 new classrooms;
  • a full-sized gym;
  • a Montessori practical life room;
  • a music/drama room;
  • an open and collaborative learning space for middle school; and
  • a new bus loop with a covered canopy.

“The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr. Montessori’s Method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world.

It is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive.

While there are many components that are integral to quality Montessori implementation, the American Montessori Society recognizes 5 core components as essential in Montessori schools—properly trained Montessori teachers, multi-age classrooms, use of Montessori materials, child-directed work, and uninterrupted work periods. Fully integrating all of them should be a goal for all Montessori schools.” Sourced from
